Mahdia, the former Fatimid capital, reaches into the sea on a peninsula. You enter through the Skifa el Kahla, the "dark gate", then walk on to the Great Mosque, the sea cemetery and Cap Afrique.

In Monastir, the Ribat of Harthema, an 8th-century fortress facing the sea, has one of the finest views on the coast, a short walk from the Bourguiba Mausoleum and the marina.
