At a Glance
In El Jem, the amphitheater of Thysdrus rises in the middle of town. Built in the 3rd century, it held 35,000 spectators and is one of the best preserved in the Roman world.
In the afternoon you head to Kairouan, the first holy city of the Maghreb: the Great Mosque founded in 670, the Aghlabid Basins and the lanes of the medina, where carpets are still woven.
