Djerba, the big island of southern Tunisia, is easy to discover in a single day: a lively market, potters' villages, lanes covered in murals and long white-sand beaches. Here is a simple itinerary, from morning to sunset.
Morning: Houmt Souk
The island's small capital is only about twenty minutes from the airport. Wander through the covered souks, between spices, fabrics and jewellery, then take a stroll around the fishing harbour. On the seafront, the Borj El Kebir fort has guarded the town's entrance for centuries.
Erriadh and Djerbahood
In the village of Erriadh, artists from all over the world painted the walls of the lanes in 2014: this is Djerbahood, an open-air street-art museum. Nearby stands El Ghriba, one of the oldest synagogues in Africa, still in use today.
Afternoon: Guellala, the potters' village
In the south of the island, Guellala has lived from pottery for generations. The workshops open their doors: you watch jars take shape on the wheel and leave with a terracotta dish or lamp.
End of the day: the beach
The east coast, around Midoun and the tourist zone, is lined with long sandy beaches: perfect for ending the day with your feet in the water.
Good to know
- The island is flat and distances are short: with a driver, you see a lot in one day.
- Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees to visit El Ghriba.
- Djerba-Zarzis airport is twenty minutes from Houmt Souk: handy for starting your visits as soon as you land.
